The Templar were a group of warrior monks set up to do battle in the Holy Land and protect pilgrims. There are ties to the Freemasons, but they are pretty loose.

Have you ever heard of over-analyzing? You’re doing it now. The “how-to” books written by private clubs, cults and other “secret” organizations are designed to be as arcane and dramatic as possible. Ever go to Shriner’s meeting? It’s an eye-opener. Offer the stuff on Ebay. Some conspiracy theorist will spend a nice amount of loot for it. Maybe even $100. Treat yourself to a fancy dinner with a friend.

Many jewelers will freely give you an opinion. If you want a documented appraisal, you have to pay for it.

Several years ago, I discovered a ring I had been given, was not fake
as I was told. It was a blue white diamond and cut according to
European specs. I found this out, when I went to a jewelers near where
I worked. One of the clerks told me. And he said for a true appraisal
I’d have to pay to have the appraiser look at it. Instead, I went to two
other jewelers and got them to verify it was what the first man had told
me. The last man put us in touch with a diamond wholesaler company.
And we went there to get an official apprasal for free. We needed the
cash to buy our Christmas that year. The clerk took the ring to the
appraiser, and they came back with a possible $5,000.00 value. It
was a perfect stone in color and without flaws. But they were whole-
salers and the only person who’d give that sort of money would be
someone not in the business. It would have to come from a private
party. As there is a terrific mark up on diamonds. They were willing
to pay only $500.00 for the ring. And I took it, because we were
desperate. It sure was a let down, between value, and actual worth
to a diamond buyer. And I was glad that it hadn’t been my actual
wedding ring I was being forced to sell. That would have been heart-
breaking.
There had been no charge for the appraisel. And the office was behind a security door in a corporate type of building with other
business offices. I remember thinking it was like walking into a
safe, due to the door security. I would think that any reputable
jewler could refer you to a good diamond appraiser that they do
business with, or at least know to be trusting. We even went to a
pawn shop to see what value the ring had there. And the owner
offered us $50.00. We were really insulted. He said he could
buy diamond rings all day long for that amount. But he didn’t buy
mine.

Always use a trusted jeweler, one that has been in business for years. The jeweler we use has been in business for 100 years, passed down through the family. They are honest as the day is long. Yes, you should get a certificate of appraisal signed by the jeweler who will usually list their credentials. There may be a charge for the appraisal if the diamond wasn’t purchased there. I’m surprised that the soon to be ex didn’t get one when he purchased the ring. If she knows where the ring was purchased take it back there for an appraisal, it may save her the cost of getting one at another store. Good luck. A perfect diamond with absolutely no flaws should appraise high.

A few years ago I was in a bind and needed money. I took two pocket watched to a jeweler to get appraised. Both watches are over one hundred years old. One has on the back a train engraved, well worn but visible. That watch still working.One was very heavy and looked like silver or white gold. I had been stupid and told the guy that I needed to get them sold for money to pay my taxes. He took his little glass thing and examined both watches. The one working watch and the one someone had wound to tight. The guy offered to buy them for $35.00. I was insulted and mad. I kept my Fathers watches and found another way to get the taxes paid with a payment option. I am still mad at that jeweler.

Personally, I’d physically go to a Jeweler/appraiser that I Truly trusted (event hat is no guarantee.)

I agree with the person who said get multiple opinions. Also, make sure that they will provide you with pictures and written information. For example, dont just let them say, ok its worth 1000$. Make them explain to you in writing why its worth that.

If it really is that good of a diamond, it should have a tracable serial number on it. They should also be able to provide images of the diamond. The jeweler can tell by eye, but they will probably put it on a digitalized microscope to do the official evaluation.
